It ain’t easy bein’ free in Week 3 as a Retiree…

September 20th, 2007

Long story. It’s enough to say that I’ve been crushed to realize that I apparently am not lazy, shiftless, aimless and worthless — that I like to work, like to be with people and do not use an abundance of open hours well.

More to come later, ideally, not on this subject. Anybody have anything they want to discuss?

As I said in my e-mail a week or so ago, in about three more weeks you will start finding things you have never noticed begin to be of interest. I have been retired for several years and don’t have the time to do all that I find interesting.
One common thread is the love of your fellow man, and what you can do to help.
Remenber( as we have discussed over the years) you can stay out of the bunker.

Thanks, Joe, and thanks, Pamela (whose post I accidently deleted) and thanks to the third person who shared their thoughts. I went downtown and had lunch with a guy I know and that certainly helped. Pamela, I have looked in 202 at night and found it extraordinarily cool in design. I hear the food is good, if upscale in price. Some night I’ll get there, though I’m not much for big tall green or red mixed drinks.

Hi Joe,

Nice long story there… And happy to see you’re still ready to move on & above things. Had to log in again before I took off & no, not quite headed to the pkwy or zoo yet.

I enjoy hearing about your visits to different places if you want to share more.

Just a thought.. Mostly everyone works on some type of computer at work & home. So much has changed., one has to wonder what did we did without computers & email? well, for one thing, I guess we spent more time with our families & friends and of course, got alot more house work in & out done!

So, what was the hardest thing for you & others to get used to? For me… I remember, OMG, how on earth do I use this mouse?? ( it was flying all over the screen!!) And not long ago I was telling someone to right click, then, etc… they said “what does right click mean?”
and copy & paste….. duh, what does that mean & how do you do it? Of course we’ve all had to have help once we got started with a friend or family member and when I saw them doing all this at first, I thought they were the smartest person in the world!! The one thing that really bugs me is email with 4 or more attachments to open. I don’t understand why people don’t clean up their email before forwarding, as in jokes, etc. I can understand one or two, (sometimes) but PLEASE… leave other email addys out so the whole world doesn’t see everyone your sending too. So many people I know don’t know how to send to “undisclosed recipients”… then at least you’re not giving the world all your friends addys as they forward on also ??

Okay, that’s my thought for the day~~

How about this for a topic, even though I fear I will sound way too sappy; the very simple pleasures in our lives that we take for granted?

Joe // Sep 20, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Sure, we can do that … but only if we stay hip and don’t sound like a bunch of retired … oops, that’s me … has beens.

Like, we shouldn’t say all the good music stopped by 1970, even though it’s true.

Md. Mama // Sep 21, 2007 at 8:28 am

I apparently stopped being edgy and hip when my kids became teenagers and young adults. They would remind me of that fact on a daily basis. Hey, I still watch MTV and have my own ‘myspace’ so I can try to stay up with whats happ’n, much to my kids dismay. They especially hate it when I leave them messages on their myspace accounts. :)

And it is so true that all the good music was in the ’70’s. Does that makes us ‘has beens’? I should say not! It just means we have good taste in music.

Melinda // Sep 21, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Md. Mama and Joe..you are not a has been for liking songs from the 70’s but I think the good music was in the 50’s. I can listen to Barry Manilow, The greatest songs of the Fifties, and still sing along remembering the words. The music these days I cannot even understand the words. I hear he has a new CD, “Songs from the 70’s” so maybe one you want to buy and you can sing along with words I am sure you remember.
I think I take for granted air-condition.
I grew up when we sat around a fan in the middle of the floor and sleeping in front of a window to catch a breeze. Of course I think we all take for granted our families and we need to say to them daily, “I love you”. We really do not know if today could be our last day. Another tragedy as two more teens were killed. Just so very sad.
Let us all remember the families with our thoughts and prayers.

Annette // Sep 21, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Lets see I think the last CD I bought was Frank Sinatra and Michael Bolton latest, singing Frank’s Oldies. But I still like the 70’s and 80’s. I can not get enough of the Doobie Brothers, Eagles and Little River Band. Oh yea. Chicago. I even catch myself listening to K92, mostly for Danny and Zack in the morning, and leave the radio on at work. The younger girls I work with think it is funny I am listening to that music.
Hey lets live on the wild side.

Katherine // Sep 21, 2007 at 11:49 pm

Melinda,

I think it’s in the back of all our minds, what we take for granted. We need to slow down. My prayers continue to be with these families. Precious lives are being lost too soon. Take the time to live & enjoy life now while we still can. We’re only here on this place we call earth for a short visit.

The simple pleasures and taking them for granted, ties in with other thoughts that have been written on this blog.

While taking my evening walk at Darrell Shell Park the other night, I began really taking in the scene there and noticing how beautiful the area is with the rolling hills and mountains in the background. The sight and sound of the train as it blasted and rumbled past the park. The little pee-wee rec. football players and cheerleaders practicing for their games on the fields. The parents and siblings watching from the sidelines. The other walkers, runners and bikers getting in their excercise before dark. The young families on the playground. It really made me think about one of the main reasons I moved to this area to begin with and how much I love being part of this community. I have walked a zillion miles on that track in the last 12 years, but for some reason it felt so different. I was really taking the time to appreciate my surroundings and enjoy one of the few things I do for myself. I wasn’t just hurrying to get my walk in for the day.

You’re right, Katherine, it would do well for folks to slow down, look around, stop being so self absorbed and be thankful for the simple things.
