That Gundy guy…

September 25th, 2007

who coaches football at Oklahoma State gets my prize for best Internet angry outburst of 2007 for his tirade against a column by Jenni Carlson of The Daily Oklahoman during his post-game press conference on Saturday.

If you haven’t seen it, go to YouTube and type in some key words like Gundy and Carlson and take a look.

Gundy objected to Carlson’s reporting about the demotion of quarterback Bobby Reid. She suggested that his attitude was more responsible for his benching than his poor play had been.

Gundy said most of the story was fiction, but he later declined Carlson’s request that he state specifically where the fiction lay.

There is no way for most of us to know the validity of either the story or of Gundy’s accusations. I would wager that most of the story was accurate.

Gundy emphasized with maximum vehemence that college players are kids, that Reid does things right and that nobody should attack a kid when he’s down.

He told Carlson she obviously did not have children, never had a child come home from school disappointed or upset and never had to console a child in those circumstances. And he said that rather than attack a player, she should attack him.

Naturally, various journalistic groups have criticized him for his rant.

Well, the therapists always say, "Feelings are real." Gundy clearly felt he was right and he went a little bonkers for a very good cause. Sports in this country are out of control on every level.

Protecting the kids who play them — for free, basically, while others, including Gundy, profit hugely — is not the worst sin in the world. Plus, it’s exciting to watch a person in the limelight act human. He was ticked off, and he didn’t hide it.

He kept it real, and I applaud him.

I say “”WOO HOO .. you GO Gundy”" and that’s exactly what he did.! I have to admit I was abut surprised but I was smiling & admired him for what he said. He was clearly upset and he had every right to be.

Thanks for the link~

Mike and Mike had time on ESPN so I will skip piling on at You Tube.I prefer listening to Carlson or Gundy a lot more than the immoral dictator who dropped into NYC to rant! Only in America!!I would be very surprised if Frank Beamer would lose his cool at a media event.
This sure beats politics!

Ah, a man with perspective. Thank you for sharing it.
Anything beats politics …

Would he have brought up the fact that a male reporter didn’t have children? I’m not so sure.

Too easy, B.J. I’ve spotted guys without children. In fact, I sit near one at certain sporting events in this area at this time of year.
I thought that of him two weeks ago when I saw him blunderingly trying to joke with kids who sit near him.
I’m not saying he’s a creep. I’m saying his entire being shows it’s all about him and his manner shows that kids don’t get him.
So, while you may be right, it’s also possible that a man with kids will call out another man who treats kids badly. More than possible. Likely.
I hate to see kids mistreated or made uncomfortable.
Hate it. Because I have kids, and I’ve seen kids be disappointed, usually by adults of either gender.
Sorry if I’m ranting. But once you’ve coached Little League ball and seen what some kids go through, you get a little tetchy about this topic.
Love ya,

Joe

Absolutely agree with that Joe!

My Dad also coached little league. I was a cheer leader, and the Mother of one of the girls there picked her daughter as head cheer leader. I , along with may others thought I deserved it which I still think back many years ago.. yes I did. And I remember being very hurt. I wanted that position, I worked hard for it, I was better than her & it wasn’t fair. I had no hard feelings & cheered on as the others, but I remember that.

And anyone being downgraded .. I feel sorry for them. When you’re much younger and you have and see all the faith & ability in front of you, this really makes a difference in how you feel about yourself.
I overcame that but I realize.. you have to be patient with your kids and talk to them when they need you. You only get one chance. And be there for your kids, always. I was lucky & my parents were always there as they should’ve been.

Right on, Grundy! Right on, Joe!

Adults DO mistreat kids in athletics AND education. Usually by those who just don’t “get it”.

And you are so right about sports being totally out of control, it is ridiculous. Once upon a time, you could really look up to a sports figure, then came along the Charles Barkley’s of the world….who just don’t care how they behave or if they are role models. Of course, there are a few exceptions, like Ronde and Tiki.
