Still reconsidering the format of this blog:

November 1st, 2007

I believe that I will post less frequently, and that I will hold the responses to the topics at hand. In other words, if people want to converse on their own, they can ask me to pass their e-mails on to each other. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t, probably the latter, because weirdos exist in the world and I have no way of detecting them.

But off-topic responses will go unposted.

You may recall that initially I did not respond to people who wrote in. Andrew encouraged me to, as a way of building an "online community."

Well, it took too much time. And we got off track. And I wrote a lot of meaningless stuff. So, even though our numbers were admirable, I wasn’t having any fun.

One rule of retirement is: You don’t have to do anything that’s not fun.

Even if you unretire, as I will do on Monday.

So stayed tuned if you’re interested. This is a floating experiment, subject to my whims. And it’s free. That right there is a good reason not to continue it.

WHOA! Easy, Big Fella! Just remember that the days really do get short when you reach September.

Joe // Nov 1, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Cap’n Fitz,

You talking about my new job or my twilight years? I have only just begun…

Boston // Nov 1, 2007 at 9:40 pm

Joe, I’m standing on my chair clapping for you. It is SOOOO healthy to be looking at the way things are and deciding to make changes. It’s kind of like throwing out old clothes that no longer fit. Carpe diem baby. Don’t do anything that isn’t fun and fulfilling any more.
JMHO. Boston

I could not agree more. But then, that has been how I’ve lived my life–a job doing what I love with people I enjoy, enough interesting visitors from far and wide, and occasionally, a good read.

Life is beautiful.

Wowee Joe!

You kind of surprised me there. I knew something would be coming up soon. I certainly hope you had a ‘little’ fun with this blog, though I know we all got a little carried away back & forth w/ responses to eachother “and you”.

Well, I hope my response here is on the topic & as you talk about your meaningless stuff? .. Hannah Montana or whatever her name is gets the prize! I watched about 15 minutes of that show last week for the first time & I was shocked. I’ve never seen anything so stupid in my life. (sorry Hannah fans.. I’m not 15).

Joe, you’re gonna do what makes you happy & this new job of yours will get you back on track to where I think you want to be. And I agree 100 % with Boston. We have to make these changes . I have alot to make myself and I admire you for “going for it” when you had the chance, you did it Baby!

Good Luck to you & enjoy the weekend~

Joe,
Good to hear you are alive and thinking.
Glad you are taking charge of your time.
Hope you enjoy the new career…
and this beautiful day!

Melinda // Nov 5, 2007 at 4:14 pm

You go Joe.!!! I just want to agree with Boston 100%. Life is too short to get caught up in “stuff”. What I love about getting “younger”..you do not have to do anything you do not want to do…

Kay // Nov 7, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Great to know you are going to be back in print in the new weekly.

MK // Nov 13, 2007 at 2:42 pm

It’s been awhile since there were any new postings. What’s happening in Roanoke? Anything goin’ on there?

Pamela // Nov 15, 2007 at 8:51 am

Okay, what’s the ‘new weekly’ gig?
…just wondering.

Annette // Nov 18, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Lets us know how you like your job.

Beth // Nov 24, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Well, Joe Bob!!! You invite people in and then cut them out! Is that the male laziness side of this blog?? “Don’t do anything that isn’t fun???”
What exactly are you trying to say? Writing isn’t fun??? You made your living at it. No fun?

Ok, so I’m on my second large glass of wine and am just picking at you. Seemed to be a lot of sucking up for some reason from your line of faithful, so thought I throw some southern humor in there to raise a flare.

Go Cowboys,

Joe // Nov 25, 2007 at 12:15 am

Geez, Beth, two days after I finally decide I like the Cowboys and you’re piling on just the way you did in Ft. Worth 35 years ago!
No, you’re right about the blog, it’s the male laziness thing. Writing has become so yesterday for me, y’know? Thirty-six years is too long for anything except, I guess, a perfect marriage, or three pretty good ones @ 12 years apiece.
Not that I have any knowledge of that.
Good to hear from you, and I’m glad the Cowboys are winning again. Hope you’re happy. May we all be happy, come to think of it.

MK // Nov 25, 2007 at 5:59 am

Funny. The comment about three marriages @ 12 years apiece. Good to see you in print again, no sucking up here, really. No vino either. I could care less about the Cowboys, though. Is that un-American or just un-cool? Baseball’s my sport, and I am truly sorry that writing is so yesterday for you. I still read, but that seems to be even more yesterday. Happiness is vastly overrated.
